Sister Anne Clancy (formerly Sister Joseph Marian), a Sister of St. Joseph for almost 72 years, died on March 26, at Stella Maris Convent, Rockaway Park. She was 94 years old. She was the only child of Joseph and Elsie Clancy and attended St. Ephrem Elementary School and St. Saviour High School. Sister Anne entered the Sisters of St. Joseph in 1953.
Sister Anne was a gracious woman of prayer, determined to be the best possible teacher and role model to all her future students. In the years that followed, Sister Anne earned degrees that prepared her for that experience. The degrees included a BA in chemistry from St. Joseph College, an MS in chemistry/education from Fordham University, and an MS in administration and supervision from Pace University.
In 1955, Sister Anne began teaching on the elementary level with the fifth graders at Holy Name School (Brooklyn), followed
by eighth graders at St. Frances de Chantal (Wantagh) and fifth and seventh graders at St. Francis Xavier (Brooklyn). She was then assigned to teach biology and chemistry at the newly opened Bishop Kearney Diocesan High School, followed by years at Stella Maris High School, St. Angela Hall Academy, and Fontbonne Hall Academy.
At all times, Sister Anne encouraged her students to value their education and share their God-given gifts. Today, we especially remember Sister Anne for her 31 years as assistant principal and principal of Fontbonne Hall Academy. She was the consummate professional, kind, caring, and wise, who had the gift of presence to all she met and encouraged others to share their talents. Sister Anne supported all school events and fostered a genuine sense of community among the faculty, as well as the students.
The curriculum was expanded and a state-of-the-art facility was added to reflect future needs. In 2005, Sister Anne retired to Stella Maris Convent. Rev. Timothy Poth, MM, celebrated the Mass of Christian Burial for Sister Anne on April 2 in Sacred Heart Chapel, Brentwood. The burial followed at Calvary Cemetery, Brentwood.
