Sister Mildred

Sister Mildred Donohue, R.S.M., a Sister of Mercy of the Americas Mid-Atlantic Community for 74 years, died Sept. 1 at Maria Regina Residence in  Brentwood. She was 93.

She attended St. Gerard Majella School in Hollis, and then went on to attend Bishop McDonnell D.H.S. in Crown Heights, before entering the Sisters of Mercy Novitiate, Syosset, in September, 1943. She professed her final vows in March, 1949.

She ministered as an educator for nearly 50 years at St. Brigid, Bushwick, 1946-48; St. Therese of Lisieux, East Flatbush, 1948-53; St. Patrick, Kent Ave., Williamsburg, 1953-56; St. Gregory the Great, Crown Heights, 1956-61,

She served briefly at St. Mary’s Home, Syosset, 1961, before continuing her teaching career on the secondary level at Catherine McAuley H.S., East Flatbush, 1962-68; and Holy Trinity D.H.S., Hicksville, 1968-72.

She went on to serve as the assistant principal and then principal at Mater Christi D.H.S., Astoria, 1972-80; assistant principal at Mercy H.S., Riverhead, 1980-85, and as a teacher at Our Lady of Mercy Academy, Syosset, 1985-94.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated in the Sisters of Mercy Convent, Whitestone.

Burial was in St. Charles Cemetery, Farmingdale.
