Sister M. Bernardus

Sister M. Bernardus Dwyer, I.H.M., of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died Jan. 27 at Our Lady of Peace Residence, Scranton, Pa. She had just turned 93 on Jan. 2.

Born in Utica, N.Y., and given the name Elizabeth Anne, she entered the congregation on Feb. 2, 1945, and made her temporary profession of vows on Aug. 2, 1947. Her final profession of vows was on Aug. 2, 1950.

Locally, she taught at St. Ephrem Elementary School, Dyker Heights, 1960-64, and served as principal of St. Stephen Elementary School, Manhattan, 1971-74.

She also taught at elementary schools in Pennsylvania, Maryland, Connecticut and Upstate New York.

She served as a microfilm clerk at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Carbondale, Pa., 1985-91; and as a volunteer at St. Catherine of Siena parish in Binghamton, N.Y., 1998-12.

She is survived by three sisters, Phyllis Roehm and Sally Paniccia both of Vestal, N.Y.; and Patricia of Binghamton, N.Y.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at Our Lady of Peace Residence, Scranton. Burial followed at Calvary Cemetery in Johnson City, N.Y.
