Deacon John LaGreca, who formally served at Our Lady of Guadalupe parish, Dyker Heights, died suddenly April 2 at his home in New Jersey.
 He was 59.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated April 7 at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church. Auxiliary Bishop Octavio Cisneros was the main celebrant. Msgr. Robert Romano preached the homily.

“John was the kind of guy you could depend on,” said Msgr. Romano.

“When I came to the parish, there was no religious education coordinator. And I said how would you like a job? He did it for a number of years.

“He was a friendly guy. Everyone is heartbroken. He was a fixture in the neighborhood. At one point he was an auxiliary police officer.”

Msgr. Romano added that “his family and God were the centers of his life.”

“If you asked him to do something, inevitably he would say always yes.

“I know he was devoted husband, father and grandfather.”

Born in Brooklyn, he worked as a cus- tomer field representative before being ordained as a deacon May 19, 2007, by Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Basilica, Sunset Park.

At Our Lady of Guadalupe, he ministered in the fields of consolation, Pre-Cana, youth ministry and religious education.

Among the immediate survivors is his wife, Catherine, of Old Bridge, N.J.

Burial was in Resurrection Cemetery, S.I.
